The Building

The building’s story
is the island’s story

At Sala Suites, the story of the building is essentially the story of the island of Rhodes.

Since antiquity and the Knights era, to the Muslim arabesque and then to the Italian radical architecture, Rhodes island is a colorful mosaic of architectural styles, a blend of cultures that met (and often fought) on its open terrain.

The various civilizations left their track on the island’s culture and architecture, a hint to its tumultuous but rich history.

The building begun as a farmhouse surrounded by a large estate with orange groves, the so-called “Makrinaria” – long houses – with length more than 20 m. It was a fortress-style home, with 6 m. height, built long before 1200 aD.

The ground floor was an open plan area with wooden attics. In 1889 the family Dimitriadi bought the place and begun a radical renovation.

The long house was divided in rooms – Sales – and big windows with neoclassical details were opened.

More bedrooms were created, the traditional pebbled floors were added and wooden trunks were added to the ceilings, made of Lebanon cedars.

When the renovation to take its final form begun, in 2020, the building revealed its fascinating history: a multicultural mosaic that dates back to the archaic and Hellenistic era as shown by many findings, a fusion of architectural as well as political trends.

Marvel at the knightly elements such as the outdoor rooms additions, the large imposing fireplace, the arches in the courtyard, the 30m. deep well as well as the knight’s cross over a door arch. In the courtyard and one of the suites the original and very typical stamp murals can still be seen. The medieval pebbled courtyard floor was also preserved.

The renovation and transformation of the building to a luxury suites complex took place with special respect and emphasis on the structure’s rich history, making it a precious heirloom representing the island’s multi ethnic culture and historical past.
